Grant of Probate
What is a Grant of Probate?
A Grant of Probate gives authority to administer the estate of someone who has died, this includes distributing assets to the heirs.
Before dealing with the deceased person’s estate, legal authority to act must be obtained from the probate registry. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland this is called a Grant of Probate, in Scotland it is called a Grant of Confirmation.
If someone dies without a Will, the process of gaining authority to administer the estate is called applying for Letters of Administration.
